Description
Please take a good look at the picture of this Land-Rover. What is your first impression? This 1964 machine was listed as having been “fully restored by a master.” It also had a buy-it-now price of $34,000.00. If you have obscene amounts of readily disposable cash please read no further. A prospective owner called me about this exact Land-Rover, stating essentially that he had his checkbook open on his desk and was ready to take the leap, but at the last minute realized that he wasn’t qualified to determine if it was as good as the ad represented it to be. Having learned of my expertise he called to enquire if I would look over his shoulder and avert disaster, if necessary. I responded in the affirmative so he forwarded me, and I looked at, a set of about ten photographs and within a very few minutes found approximately 30 subtle but substantial faults with the vehicle. When the buyer and I spoke minutes later we determined that an on-site evaluation of the truck would be the only appropriate solution given the dichotomy between the ad copy and the nature of my findings. The buyer flew me to Toronto. While my visual evaluation of the pictures revealed only subtle clues, the on-site inspection revealed a virtual litany of issues and shattered every lingering shred of doubt. Generously and politely stated the truck was a paint job on wheels. My instructions to the buyer: “Pay not one penny more than eighteen thousand for the truck. Do not take delivery. Ship it instead directly to my shop and be prepared to spend an additional $15 to $25,000.00 for the work required to correct the encyclopedia of errors. If you have no compunctions about being caught in a similar trap, by all means proceed on your own. If, however, expensive mistakes aren’t part of your diet you might consider having your prospective purchase appraised by a 38-year veteran Land-Rover specialist and the winner of more than 35 international top restoration prizes. Please call 360.866.2254 from Monday through Saturday from 8-5 Pacific time [you may try me in the evening, too] and ask for Charles. Oh, by the way, I disqualify approximately 9½ out of ten vehicles I survey, the great majority of which are described as being “fully” and/or “professionally restored.” My company also has a virtually relentless parade of Land-Rovers through our workshop which have been purchased by unwitting individuals, dozens of whom have been heard to exclaim, "If I'd only have bought one of your Land-Rovers I would have been way ahead. My point is not to take sales away from my "competitors" but that dozens of times every year I save prospective owners from heatache and disaster........all over The United States, Canada, and Central America. If you prefer to go it on your own, I've written a 130-page book, the "Prospective Owners Handbook", on the process you may be engaged in.....finding and purchasing a quality machine without taking a bath in the process. This book is available through British Northwest Land-Rover Company, in Olympia, Washington.
